Exploring Portrait Styles
Last Fall I had my dad sit several times as I worked on drawings for an eventual painted portrait. The project has been delayed but as I start thinking about continuing I've been doing some portrait sketches to help decide what kind of painting I want it to be. This painting started as a classical alla prima oil sketch but I enjoyed it so much I pushed it a little farther than I normally would. I worked from a photo image, courtesy of Croquis Cafe, so that took the time pressure off. Instead of a three hour sitting with breaks I got to work about 5 hours so I was able to work until I felt I'd learned all I could and any more fussing would be counterproductive. This painting was also done using no solvent or solvent based medium so I'm feeling far more comfortable with using just oils to paint.
